Can you relate? I've been to that place several times In my past. I was told I should practice if I wanted to get better but I wasn't told how to practice. All I did then was go into the practice room and noodle for an hour or two then feel terrible after I was done because I wasn't a stint better. Out of frustration, I'd put my saxophone down and not return to it until several days later only to forget what I thought I was practicing the last time. Eventually, as I read I realized that the great men and women I was reading about wrote things down. I learned that "what gets written gets done." I didn't know where to start since there are so many technical exercises to practice. The more I keep planning and writing in my planner while sticking to the goals I'd set for myself, the clearer things started to become. For one I stopped noodling. By planning and writing and recording I was able to become more aware, more informed and developed the habit of deliberate practicing instead of noodling. I never forget what I should practice nor how fast or slow I can or cannot play a passage or technical exercise because it's all written down during each practice session. It wasn't just 10% or 100% growth, It was 1000% as I'm able to map how long it takes to learn a song, a technical exercise that will contribute to my development, or how long it will take to play it at 240 bpm.
