The first thing a listener hears when you play is your sound and the second is your rhythm. You can get away with playing bum notes and even misplaced chords but bad sound and poor timing/rhythm are unforgivable. A musician's poor timing is usually revealed during a recording. “The record doesn't lie.” Poor timing indicates that the musician tends to push the pulse, resulting in a stilted and jerky quality to their music. However, by correctly using a metronome while practicing, your rhythm and timing ability can be greatly improved.
